I started to respond to the other thread about Changing Colours, and went off on a tangent, so I thought I'd post a new thread:

When I was a teenager, I loved the colour Purple, and also liked names that began with J - my purple letter. Now I prefer the colour Red, and prefer names beginning with M - my red letter.

Does this mean I prefer the names because they have my favourite colour, or do I like the colour because of names I've heard that I like?

I actually still like names beginning with J - however I now dislike the colour I get from them. I have a feeling that my J has changed subtly since I was a teenager, that it has got lighter and more pinky purple rather than dark - I wonder if this has anything to do with it.

I think letter colours can change over time, just like our favourite colour, and anything else we can have a preference for, like fashion and music.

Our colour associations come from somewhere, whether we recognise what it is or not. It's surely entirely possible that the connotations of our associations change from experiences we may have.

For example, you may like the colour green in your teens because it reminds you (subconsciously or consciously) of green fields, trees, happy times in the summer with friends in the countryside etc etc, and you may associate it with the letter F (consciously or subconsciously) because of Field, Farm, Friends, Fine, Free, Freedom, Float, Feel, etc... but later in life, you may begin to associate F with a darker more sinister green via words such as Feral, Fight, Forest, Frightened, Fear, Foreign, etc. Thus you could begin to dislike the letter F or become afraid of it, and while the colour has only changed slightly, your associations have changed enough for the letter to have a whole new meaning.

This is of course only one theory and everyone's associations are different and work differently. It's interesting to ponder on, though!

My F just happens to be green, but I find that the meaning of the word has no relavence to whether I like the word or the color. For instance, I was part of a synesthesia research study on grapheme color, and I was asked whether I thought a word was "good" or "bad"... I ended up choosing all words that had an 's' as being bad because I really dislike the color of my 's' - even words like safe, sweet, sunny, delicious, smile and kitties. I also said that words with color combinations I enjoy were "good", even when the meaning was bad - such as mean, fear, apparition, ebola, violence and frozen. I wasn't told whether I was judging the colors or the meanings, so I went with my first gut feeling. I guess that this meant I went with colors.

I should mention, my 's' is yellow like this guy  kinda, and I do like the color yellow. I really enjoy wearing it, too. I just hate the way it dries out my words!

I hope this is the type of response you were looking for.

That's a hard one. It could be a little bit of both.

I think letter colours can change over time
A few of mine have, gradually. I know others here have also had letter colors change.

Our colour associations come from somewhere, whether we recognise what it is or not. It's surely entirely possible that the connotations of our associations change from experiences we may have.
The connotations, yes.

and while the colour has only changed slightly, your associations have changed enough for the letter to have a whole new meaning.
This is a life-experience thing, not a syn thing. My L used to be lavender and now it's pale yellow, and I know different L words now than I did when I was younger, but those two facts don't affect each other, especially not in terms of how I think of the letter L. I'm trying to think of ways that they could affect each other, to put myself in someone else's shoes, but I'm drawing a blank. I find it hard to believe that life experience and syn can combine in that way, to result in a new perception of a letter. It strikes me as a strictly life experience thing, with the syn response being a coincidence. I could be wrong, I'm no researcher, but I've tried for a few hours (since I first saw this post) to reconcile the two, but with no success.

You're right though, it's an interesting thing to ponder!

sometimes i do things like this with music, like i used to not like hardcore music cause it was a black color and i didn't like that but i kind of learned to bypass the color then after listening to more i found new colors in the music because i got more familiar with it...
right now i'm listening to Emmure  (check them if you like hardcore  ) and they were very black but now it has black and other colors out in front like red and blue.

I'm pretty sure some of my colours have changed over time. I know for sure my colour for flute has. Flute music used to sound metallic blue, much like electric guitar, but it changed to magenta.

I mentioned this in a different thread so pardon my redundancy, but my "C" is constantly changing to a few various colors, like it can't seem to settle down. It goes from hot liquid red to navy blue to black...shades vary...it's a little annoying.

I've noticed recently that my N is changing colours. It used to distinctly have no colour at all, but lately it's been red-orange at times. It's not coloured all the time, but if I look at my calendar right now, the N in June is definitely red-orange. It's rather annoying, how sometimes it plays a part in the colour of a word and sometimes it's not noticed at all.
