 leaning letters?

I was on a tram () with a friend of mine heading back from the Botanical Gardens when we passed a train station called 'Flinders Street' and my friend said "I love the name Flinders, it's such a slanted name". When I asked her what she meant she said that particular letters in the word physically fall forward or backward which makes the whole word slant a certain direction: F l i n d e rs = Flinders

But then she went on to explain that there are letters that stabilise words (i.e.. 's', 't', 'h', 'i') and prevent them from falling.
I got a hold of this concept quite easily because I found that if you gave weight to letters (which I don't usually), the structure of certain letters would cause them to 'fall' in a certain direction. For example the letter 'B' would have weight concentrated on her curvy parts and would consequently fall forward. So I compared my theoretical weighted letters to hers and most of them were the same with slight differences (e.g. 'p' wouldn't lean in either direction whereas I predicted it would lean forward).

Does anyone else have 'leaning' letters or words? And could this possibly be a form of synaesthesia?

That's a really interesting concept! It sounds like it could be synesthesia if your friend sees the letters as "weighted". But could she have meant that her handwriting slants those particular letters?

No, her handwriting when it does slant (its hard to tell she's a scrawler) it slants only to the right.

Whoa, cool! That definitely sounds like it might be syn... time to experiment!

 (<-- those can be lab goggles!)

Hehe, lab goggles, I like it.

And I have to admit that does sound like syn...I'm just trying to see if I can figure out what type. Grapheme -> position...? Very interesting though!

:bsmile: Yay, now it's time to convince her (yet again) that she may be a synaesthete! Lab goggles! How clever!
